Bead lingo. Sizes and Abbreviations. i.e. Hank, M/R, Ab, °Artwork questions
Are the art pieces ready to hang? How do I hang them?
All unframed wall hangings come with a sleeve sewn on the back (some pieces
- like panels - will need framed. We will include a bar drilled and strung on
smaller pieces (unless you want to make your own to save on shipping), leaving
you to just put a hanger on the wall. Or Quilt clips can be purchased at most
fabric/craft stores (Jo-Ann, Hobby Lobby).
How do I drill the bar for proper hanging? Cut a piece of 1/4 inch (1/2 inch for heavy items) piece of flat wood molding or thin aluminium bar (available at most hardware/lumber centers like Home Depot/Lowe's) about 1" longer then the sleeve on the back of your quilt. Drill a small hole 1/4"ish of inch from the "top" corners. Either: string nylon line/wire and hook in the wall or use finishing nails partially inserted into the wall and slide bar onto nails.
How do I clean them? Canned air for beaded pieces. Fabric pieces can get gentle (lowered force) vacuuming with a piece of cheese cloth over the hose for dust. The attachment for curtains is good, too.
What is a hank? 12 strands of beads, each 16" (40cm) long.
How many beads in a hank? Lots. It depends on size, but 16" is always about 40cm.
What is AB? Aurora Borealis, sometimes called rainbow (RB). A finish on one side of the bead that give it a rainbow reflection.
What is S/L? Silver lined, the hole is lined with silver.
What is M/R (or MR)? Matte and rainbow finished.
What the difference between a size 2, 3 and 5 bugle? Length. A 2 is smallest at 4mm, a 3 is 6mm and a 5 is largest at 12mm long.
What is the difference between a 15°, 13°, and an 11°?
Size. The larger the number, the smaller the bead.
Which bead size should I use? The most common size used is the 11. Most pattern books recommend it, most jewelery (hat bands, belts and other loomwork jewelery) use it and as a Scout (Boy or Girl) that's probably what you used for your loom. (NOTE: If your troop used larger beads they were likly 8°, or even larger 6° sometimes called E or pony beads.)
Which thread should I use? We recommend Silamide. Joyce Scott and Susan Shie use it. Nymo is an old stand by, but Silamide is stronger, and stretches less. It's "real" use is as a tailor's thread to mend/make men's suits (strong enough for a man but I use it too). It comes in many colors and is equal to a Nymo size B. Wax or Thread Heaven the end for easier needle threading.
Which size needle? Sized like the beads. Choose a needle size equal to your bead or try one size larger. Japanese beads have a bigger hole so sometimes it's OK to go even 2 sizes larger. Of course weaving through beads with doubled thread and going back through stiches...go smaller.
How do I order? To order: e-mail Andi and Marty. Or call -- 740-797-3026. We're in Ohio, as in Eastern time. leave a message if you get the machine.
How do I pay? We accept PayPal or Prepaid orders are fine, too.
Please give us a full work day to get you a total including shipping.
How much is shipping? It is our experience that most supply orders
are under 2 pounds. So we use Priority mail. Domestic shipments for a typical
2 pound order start at $5.95 (we use delivery confirmation), though a roll or
2 of thread can go in a padded envelope for much less. On orders over 5 pounds
we'll check out UPS. Art pieces are more and never sent USPS unless you demand
it. Depending on size, shape (framed, can it be rolled...) and weight (embellished
pieces get heavy quick), you get the idea, plus all are tracked.
What about Canada or overseas?Global priority or small packet
is fast and inexpensive to most countries and there's no brokerage fees. Taxes/fees
your country charges on delivery are unavoidable.
What about returns? Unopened, resellable, packages must be returned within 14 days. Let us know it's on the way. We do everything possible to make sure what you order is what you get, so we rarely get a return. Mail returns back to:
